7 Must-Do Activities in Nha Trang

Nha Trang’s Beautiful Beaches

You can’t visit Nha Trang without soaking up the sun on its stunning beaches. Tran Phu Beach, the main stretch, offers everything from shaded loungers to street food vendors selling fresh fruit and snacks. For a quieter escape, head to Bai Dai Beach just outside the city for a more peaceful retreat.

Island-Hopping Tour

Nha Trang is surrounded by small islands, each with its unique appeal. I joined an affordable island-hopping tour that took us to Hon Mun (perfect for snorkelling) and Hon Tam, where you can relax on the sandy beaches. For about $35 per person, most tours include lunch, snorkelling equipment and transportation, making it a backpacker’s dream day out.

Ba Ho Waterfalls

A short motorbike ride from the city, Ba Ho Waterfalls is a hidden gem perfect for nature lovers. Swim in the natural pools, trek the jungle trails, or try a little cliff jumping if you’re feeling brave. I spent an afternoon here soaking in the jungle vibes and cooling off in the pools.

The Long Son Pagoda & Giant Buddha

Get a dose of culture and a little workout in at Long Son Pagoda. The climb up to the giant white Buddha is steep but short, and the views at the top are worth every step. It’s a peaceful break from the beach buzz. A must-see!

Historic Po Nagar Cham Towers

For a taste of local history and culture, the Po Nagar Cham Towers are a must-see. Built between the 7th and 12th centuries, these ancient Hindu temples sit atop a hill overlooking the Cai River and offer a beautiful view of Nha Trang.

Nha Trang Cathedral

This Gothic-style cathedral, built by the French in the early 20th century, is a peaceful spot to admire some unique architecture and take a break from the heat. With its stained-glass windows and arched ceilings, it’s a nice change of pace from the beach scene.

Local Markets

Nha Trang’s markets are a sensory feast, filled with vibrant colours, fresh produce, and local handicrafts. The main market, Dam Market, is the place to go if you want to shop like a local. Here, you’ll find everything from tropical fruits and spices to handcrafted souvenirs. Bargain, it’s perfect for picking up affordable gifts or snacks for a day at the beach.

Eating Local in Nha Trang

If you’re like me and love diving into the local food scene, Nha Trang won’t disappoint. The flavours here are vibrant, affordable, and made for adventurous taste buds! Here are a few must-tries:

  • Bún Chả Cá: This fish cake noodle soup is a local favourite—fresh, flavorful, and an absolute steal at under $2 at street stalls. So delicious, it’s a must-try!
  • Nem Nướng: Grilled pork skewers served with rice paper, fresh herbs, and dipping sauce. It’s a hands-on experience where you roll everything up yourself.
  • Seafood: Nha Trang is all about seafood, and a beachside BBQ feast is a must.
  • Bánh Căn: These mini rice pancakes are filled with egg, shrimp, or pork, and they’re crispy and satisfying.

Getting Around Nha Trang

Getting around Nha Trang is a breeze, with plenty of options to suit your backpacking style:

  • Motorbike Rentals: Renting a motorbike for around $4-5 a day gives you total freedom. I loved zipping around to explore nearby spots like Ba Ho Waterfalls.
  • Walking & Biking: If you’re staying close to the beach or city centre, walking is ideal, especially along the scenic seaside promenade.

Whether cruising on a motorbike or just taking a stroll along the beach, Nha Trang is easy to navigate.

Tips for Backpacking Nha Trang

  • Stay Alert in Tourist Areas: Some vendors and taxi drivers may try to overcharge, so stick with reputable companies, and don’t be afraid to bargain politely.
  • Keep an Eye on Your Belongings: Especially in crowded areas like the beach or night markets, be mindful of your things to avoid any mishaps.
  • Bring Plenty of Sunscreen: The sun can be intense, so pack a good SPF to keep your skin protected.

My Take

One of my absolute favourite memories was snorkelling off Hon Mun Island early in the morning. I booked a spot on a small boat tour that left around 8 am, which was perfect because the water was calm, and the sunlight was just starting to rise. As I dove in, I found myself surrounded by vibrant coral reefs and many tropical fish flashing. It was surreal watching clownfish darting around the anemones, while other fish cruised by in colourful groups.

And the street food? Unbeatable. I spent my nights hopping from one vendor to the next, tasting new flavours at every turn. Nha Trang is just one of those places where you can’t help but want to stay a little longer.

Wrapping Up

Nha Trang is one of those places that just works for backpackers.

You’ve got everything here: beaches where you can relax, nightlife that’s as lively as you want it to be, and food that’s both delicious and cheap. I’d start my day snorkelling or just chilling on the sand, lunch at a street stall for a couple of bucks, and by evening, I’d either find myself at a beach party or just hanging out with other travellers.

Nha Trang has this way of pulling you in, making you feel like you could stay a while. So pack light, bring an open mind, and get ready to make some incredible memories you might find it’s harder to leave than you thought.
