7 Must-Do Activities in Nha Trang

1. Nha Trang’s Beautiful Beaches

When we think of Nha Trang, we instantly picture its beautiful beaches. Over the years, we’ve spent countless days on these shores, enjoying everything from water sports to simply lounging by the sea. Each beach in Nha Trang has its own vibe, and we’ve come to love them all for different reasons.

Some beaches are bustling with life, where the sound of waves mixes with the energy of beach bars and water sports, while others offer a more peaceful experience, perfect for escaping the crowds and soaking up the natural beauty.

For us, a day at the beach in Nha Trang isn’t just about soaking up the sun. It’s about diving into local experiences, whether that’s trying new activities or enjoying a quiet moment with the sound of the waves in the background. We’ve kayaked, swum, and even tried our hand at parasailing here. But sometimes, it’s just as simple as sitting by the shore with a coconut in hand and watching the world go by.

Here are the beaches we recommend you check out:

  • Tran Phu Beach
  • Bai Dai Beach
  • Hon Chong Beach
  • Doc Let Beach
  • Vinh Hoa Beach

2. Island-Hopping Tour

One of our absolute favourite ways to spend the day in Nha Trang is with the FUSE Cruise island-hopping tour. For just $44.50, this 6-hour adventure takes you to some of the most beautiful islands in the area. It’s an all-in-one deal transportation, snorkelling gear, and lunch are all included, so you can focus on enjoying the day without any hassle.

We always kick things off at Hon Mun Island, and honestly, the snorkelling here never gets old. The water is so clear, it feels like you’re swimming in an aquarium, with colourful fish darting between the coral reefs.

We’ve spent hours underwater, discovering new fish and coral with each dip. After that, we head to Hon Tam, a super chill spot where you can kick back on the beach, swim in calm waters, or just relax in the sun. It’s the perfect place to recharge before heading back to the mainland.

3. Ba Ho Waterfalls

Ba Ho Waterfalls, just a short motorbike ride from the city, this place feels like a true escape into nature. The moment we arrived, the noise of the city faded away, and all we could hear was the sound of the jungle and the rushing waterfalls.

I spent an entire afternoon here, and it was hands down one of my favourite experiences in Nha Trang. After a short trek through the jungle (which honestly felt like stepping into a movie), we arrived at the first waterfall.

The natural pools here are perfect for a swim, and the cool, fresh water was a welcome relief after the hike. There’s something so freeing about jumping into those pools, surrounded by nothing but nature. If you’re feeling brave, you can also try some cliff jumping.

What makes Ba Ho Waterfalls so special isn’t just the swimming or the adventure, it’s the peace that comes with being surrounded by nature. If you’re looking for a genuine adventure, this place has to be on your list. And if you want to make it easy, you can join us on the FUSE Ba Ho Waterfalls Tour for a guided trip to the waterfalls.

4. The Long Son Pagoda & Giant Buddha

When we take guests to Long Son Pagoda, it’s always one of the highlights of their trip. The climb to the Giant Buddha is a bit of a workout, but it’s a short and manageable one, and the reward at the top is more than worth it. The panoramic views of Nha Trang from up there are incredible, you get a real sense of the city’s layout, with the beaches on one side and the lush hills on the other.

For us, it’s not just about the climb or the views. There’s a peaceful vibe to the whole place that makes it stand out. The pagoda itself is full of character, and you can spend time wandering around, exploring the intricate statues and temples scattered around the area. Plus, after the short hike up, there’s always the option to relax at the top, take in the scenery, and snap some photos before heading back down.

Visiting the Giant Buddha and the surrounding pagoda gives you a unique break from the usual beach days and provides a deeper connection to Nha Trang’s history and spiritual side.

5. Historic Po Nagar Cham Towers

These ancient Hindu temples, built between the 7th and 12th centuries, stand atop a hill that offers a stunning view of the Cai River and Nha Trang’s surrounding landscape. For us, visiting the Po Nagar Towers is like stepping back in time and experiencing the legacy of the Cham civilisation that once thrived here.

What we love about this spot is that it combines both history and breathtaking views. The architecture of the towers is impressive, with intricate carvings and designs that reflect the craftsmanship of the Cham people. The atmosphere around the towers is peaceful, making it the perfect place to walk around, take in the surroundings, and learn a bit about the area's cultural significance. It’s also a great place to take photos; the view of the river below, framed by the towers, is picturesque.

6. Nha Trang Cathedral

Nha Trang Cathedral, built by the French in the early 20th century, this Gothic-style church stands out with its unique architecture, making it one of the most interesting landmarks in the city. We love how the cathedral offers a quiet respite from the usual fast pace of Nha Trang, with its cool interior providing relief from the heat.

Inside, the stained-glass windows and arched ceilings create a calming atmosphere, perfect for a moment of reflection. The building itself is beautifully maintained, and the craftsmanship of the French colonial era is evident in every detail.

A trip to Nha Trang isn’t complete without exploring the local markets. The markets here are a sensory overload in the best way vibrant colours, fresh produce, and the smell of local spices fill the air, making it an exciting place to wander and discover. Our go-to spot is Dam Market, the main market in Nha Trang, where you can shop like a local and truly immerse yourself in the culture.

Walking through the market, you’ll find everything from tropical fruits like juicy mangoes and sweet bananas to a huge variety of spices that instantly take you to the heart of Vietnam’s culinary world.

Getting Around Nha Trang

Getting around Nha Trang is a breeze, with plenty of options to suit your backpacking style:

  • Motorbike Rentals: Renting a motorbike for around $4-5 a day gives you total freedom. I loved zipping around to explore nearby spots like Ba Ho Waterfalls.
  • Walking & Biking: If you’re staying close to the beach or city centre, walking is ideal, especially along the scenic seaside promenade.

Whether cruising on a motorbike or just taking a stroll along the beach, Nha Trang is easy to navigate.

Tips for Backpacking Nha Trang

  • Stay Alert in Tourist Areas: Some vendors and taxi drivers may try to overcharge, so stick with reputable companies, and don’t be afraid to bargain politely.
  • Keep an Eye on Your Belongings: Especially in crowded areas like the beach or night markets, be mindful of your things to avoid any mishaps.
  • Bring Plenty of Sunscreen: The sun can be intense, so pack a good SPF to keep your skin protected.

My Take

One of my absolute favourite memories was snorkelling off Hon Mun Island early in the morning. I booked a spot on a small boat tour that left around 8 am, which was perfect because the water was calm, and the sunlight was just starting to rise. As I dove in, I found myself surrounded by vibrant coral reefs and many tropical fish flashing. It was surreal watching clownfish darting around the anemones, while other fish cruised by in colourful groups.

And the street food? Unbeatable. I spent my nights hopping from one vendor to the next, tasting new flavours at every turn. Nha Trang is just one of those places where you can’t help but want to stay a little longer.

Wrapping Up

Nha Trang is one of those places that just work for backpackers.

You’ve got everything here: beaches where you can relax, nightlife that’s as lively as you want it to be, and food that’s both delicious and cheap. I’d start my day snorkelling or just chilling on the sand, lunch at a street stall for a couple of bucks, and by evening, I’d either find myself at a beach party or just hanging out with other travellers.

Nha Trang has this way of pulling you in, making you feel like you could stay a while. So pack light, bring an open mind, and get ready to make some incredible memories you might find it’s harder to leave than you thought.
