Where to Go in Vietnam Once You Arrive Visa-Free

Vietnam is a country that truly has it all — from buzzing metropolises and historic towns to misty mountains and sun-soaked beaches. With your visa exemption secured, here are the must-visit spots to add to your itinerary:

Hanoi

The capital of Vietnam is a city where old meets new in the most fascinating way. Wander through the maze-like streets of the Old Quarter, where vendors sell everything from fresh bánh mì to steaming bowls of phở. French colonial architecture sits alongside ancient pagodas, while modern cafes buzz with youthful energy. Don’t miss Hoan Kiem Lake, where locals gather for morning tai chi, or the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first university. Hanoi is also the gateway to the north, making it the perfect starting point for your Vietnam adventure.

Sapa

Nestled in the northern mountains, Sapa is a paradise for trekkers and nature lovers. Here you’ll find rolling rice terraces that shift from emerald green to golden yellow with the seasons, surrounded by mist-covered peaks. The region is home to ethnic minority communities like the Hmong and Dao, giving travelers a chance to experience authentic homestays and traditional crafts. For the adventurous, hiking Fansipan — the “Roof of Indochina” — offers breathtaking views from Vietnam’s highest peak.

Ninh Binh

Often called “Ha Long Bay on land,” Ninh Binh is a landscape straight out of a dream. Limestone karsts rise dramatically from rice paddies and winding rivers, creating a magical setting best explored by boat. Glide along the Tam Coc or Trang An waterways, where caves open into hidden valleys, or hike to the top of Mua Cave Viewpoint for one of the most iconic panoramas in Vietnam. With its slower pace and natural beauty, Ninh Binh is an ideal escape just a few hours from Hanoi.

Da Nang

A coastal city with a balance of modern comforts and natural beauty, Da Nang has become one of Vietnam’s most livable destinations. Its long stretches of sandy beaches, such as My Khe Beach, are perfect for swimming and surfing, while the nearby Marble Mountains offer cave temples and scenic viewpoints. By night, the city comes alive with colorful bridges — including the famous Dragon Bridge, which breathes fire and water on weekends. Da Nang also serves as a convenient hub for day trips to Hoi An and Ba Na Hills.

Hoi An

One of Vietnam’s most beloved towns, Hoi An Ancient Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that feels like stepping back in time. Its narrow streets are lined with yellow-painted merchant houses, tailor shops, and riverside cafes. At night, the town transforms into a lantern-lit wonderland, with floating candles drifting along the Thu Bon River. Beyond the historic core, you can cycle through rice paddies, relax on An Bang Beach, or join a cooking class to learn local specialties. It’s no wonder Hoi An captures the hearts of travelers from around the world.

Nha Trang

Famous for its turquoise waters and vibrant energy, Nha Trang is Vietnam’s ultimate beach city. Days here are best spent island-hopping to nearby bays, snorkeling in coral reefs, or soaking in the famous mineral mud baths. The city also boasts a lively nightlife scene, from beach bars to rooftop lounges overlooking the sea. With its mix of relaxation and entertainment, Nha Trang is a must for those who want both adventure and leisure.

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

As Vietnam’s largest and busiest city, Ho Chi Minh City is the country’s economic and cultural hub. The streets hum with energy — motorbikes weave through traffic, markets overflow with colors and scents, and skyscrapers tower above French colonial landmarks. Visit the War Remnants Museum to understand Vietnam’s history, shop at Ben Thanh Market for souvenirs and street food, and end the day with a cocktail at a rooftop bar overlooking the skyline. Saigon is a city that never sleeps, making it an unforgettable stop on your journey.
