Connecting Through Hanoi? Here’s What You Need to Know
If you're arriving on an international flight into Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) and have a domestic connection (like a flight to Da Nang or Hoi An), you'll need to transfer from Terminal 2 (International) to Terminal 1 (Domestic). While they're close—about 850 meters apart—they're in separate buildings and not connected indoors.
Here’s how to transfer smoothly in 2025:
Option 1: Free Airport Shuttle Bus
The easiest and most budget-friendly way to move between terminals is the free shuttle bus operated by Noi Bai Airport.
Service Hours: 5:00 AM to 1:00 AM the following day
Frequency:
- From 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM: Every 15 minutes (2 buses in operation)
- From 5:00 AM to 7:00 AM and 11:00 PM to 1:00 AM: Every 20 minutes (1 bus in operation)
Pick-up Location:
- International Terminal: Floor 1, Lane 2 (look for poles 11 and 12)
Drop-off Location:
- Domestic Terminal: Floor 1, Hall A
How it works:
- After exiting the arrival corridor, head outside and locate the shuttle stop for your terminal (between pillar 11 and 12).
- Ride the shuttle (5–10 minutes depending on traffic).
- Upon arrival at your new terminal, head to your airline's check-in counter or connecting flight gate.
- If you're checking in again for a domestic flight, proceed to the relevant counter to drop off your bags and complete procedures.
Tip: The shuttle is ideal for travelers with luggage or those unfamiliar with the airport layout.
Option 2: Ride-Hailing Apps (Grab or Xanh SM)
If you're in a rush or prefer a more private ride, use Vietnam’s ride-hailing apps, like Grab (Vietnam’s Uber) or Xanh SM (Vietnam's electric taxi service).
- Fare: Around 50,000 VND (~$2 USD)
- Travel Time: 5 minutes
- Availability: Immediate, especially at T2 arrival zone
These apps are widely used across Vietnam and are incredibly convenient for airport transfers and travel within cities. Simply:
- Download Grab or Xanh SM in advance
- Sync your card to avoid using cash
- Enter your drop-off location as Noi Bai Domestic Terminal Drop Off/Gate
Why use it: Fares are fixed and transparent, no haggling required, and you’ll get picked up fast—ideal if you’re tight on time or missed the shuttle.
Option 3: Walk Between Terminals
Feeling energetic or traveling light? You can walk between the two terminals.
- Distance: About 850 meters (~15–20 minutes)
- Route: Clearly marked paths outside the airport buildings
- Best for: Travelers with carry-on only or those avoiding the shuttle wait
Tip: If you’re going to walk, make sure you're not in a rush or without heavy luggage as the walkway is not well paved or sheltered. The free shuttle is still the best way to get between the two terminals.
Tips for Domestic Check-In
- Check-in usually closes 40 minutes before departure
- If your baggage isn’t checked through, you'll need to collect it at T2, transfer to T1, and check in again
- Budget at least 2 to 2.5 hours for your international-to-domestic connection, especially during busy seasons
