8 Must-Do Activities

1. Wander Through the Ancient Town

The first thing we always tell our guests is to just walk. Forget your guidebook and don’t plan every move. Hoi An’s Ancient Town is small but bursting with stories. You’ll stumble upon golden-yellow buildings, winding alleys, and temples that have stood for centuries. Trust us, there’s no need for a map.

Our favourite part? The Japanese Covered Bridge. It's not just a cool photo op; it’s a piece of history. Built in the 1500s to link the Japanese and Chinese communities, this little bridge holds a lot of stories. And if you find yourself in Phuc Kien Assembly Hall or peeking inside Tan Ky Old House, one of the oldest preserved homes in town, take a moment to breathe it all in. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into the past.

Grab a cup of Vietnamese iced coffee (it’s strong, but trust us, you’ll love it) and just sit by the river. You’ll end up doing nothing for an hour, and it’ll be the best part of your day.

2. Suit Up with a Custom Tailoring Experience

One of the coolest things about Hoi An is the tailor shops. Seriously, where else can you get a custom suit made for a fraction of what you'd pay at home? Whether you’re after a sharp suit, a flowing dress, or even linen pants to beat the heat, the tailors here have got you. It’s all about getting it just right, without the hefty price tag.

Big-name shops like Yaly Couture or BeBe Tailor are great, but we’ve found that some of the smaller, lesser-known tailors can surprise you with their quality and personal touch. One tailor we keep recommending to our guests is Old Town Tailors, right upstairs from FUSE Old Town Hostel. It’s fast, affordable, and you can pick up your custom outfit the very next day. And if you’re staying with us, don’t forget about the 250,000 VND discount they offer our guests!

3. Rice Fields and Countryside Exploration

If you really want to see the countryside and get a taste of local life, rent a bike and ride through the rice paddies. There’s no better way to take in the sights than from two wheels. You’ll cycle through narrow dirt paths, pass water buffalo, and wave to friendly locals who’ll probably wave back. It’s a peaceful, unforgettable way to experience the beauty of Hoi An’s rural landscape.

If you want to dive even deeper into Hoi An's countryside, consider booking our FUSE Hoi An Bicycle Tour. Our guided tour takes you on a journey through the breathtaking rice paddies, traditional farming villages, and hidden spots that most tourists miss. Along the way, you’ll learn about the history and cultural significance of the land, while taking in some spectacular views.

The ride takes you through some of the most serene parts of the countryside. Don’t forget to bring your camera because the landscape is a photographer’s dream.

4. Visiting Local Markets

For a truly authentic experience, make sure to visit Hoi An's Central Market. It’s chaotic, vibrant, and the heart of local life. Here, you’ll find vendors selling fresh produce, fragrant spices, colorful lanterns, and handcrafted goods. You’ll get a real feel for the culture as you watch locals haggle for everything from herbs to fish.

The food is another highlight of the market. Don’t miss out on trying Cao Lau, the iconic noodle dish that defines Hoi An, or a freshly made Banh Mi sandwich, which you can get from one of the famous street vendors. But don’t rush take your time to explore the market stalls, chat with the locals, and maybe even pick up a souvenir or two.

The early morning hours are the best time to experience the market before it gets crowded.

5. Street Food Heaven

Hoi An is a street food paradise, and trying the local dishes is a rite of passage. Here are a few signature dishes you have to try:

  • Cao Lau: Hoi An’s signature noodle dish with pork, herbs, and crispy crackers.
  • Banh Mi: A Vietnamese sandwich with various fillings; try it at Banh Mi Phuong for an unforgettable bite.
  • White Rose Dumplings: Shrimp dumplings are unique to Hoi An, delicate and delicious.
  • Com Ga: Fragrant chicken rice served with herbs, chilli, and dipping sauce.
  • Mi Quang: Noodles with pork, shrimp, and rice crackers flavorful and filling.

6. Take a Boat Ride on the Thu Bon River

A boat ride along the Thu Bon River is one of the most peaceful ways to enjoy the magic of Hoi An. It may be a popular activity, but there’s something timeless and captivating about floating down this river. Boats depart regularly in the late afternoon, typically from around 4 PM until the evening, and it's the perfect opportunity to witness the town come alive at dusk.

As the sun begins to set, you’ll glide past the town’s waterfront, with its charming ancient buildings and glowing lanterns reflecting on the water. The atmosphere is calm, and the sights are truly mesmerising.

Along the way, you’ll be given the opportunity to release a small paper lantern onto the water, a tradition believed to bring luck and good fortune. We may not be superstitious, but it's a moment that truly feels special every time.

The best time to go is just before sunset, as the river and sky light up with shades of orange and pink, creating a perfect photographic moment. It’s the most serene and picturesque part of the day in Hoi An.

7. Chill on Tan Thanh Beach

For a peaceful, less crowded beach experience, Tan Thanh Beach is the place to be. With its golden sand and calm waters, it offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle.

If you're staying at FUSE Beachside Hostel, you're just steps away from Barefoot Beach Club, our favourite hangout. This laid-back spot offers everything from paddleboard tours to live music, all in a relaxed atmosphere perfect for unwinding. Whether you’re looking to chill by the water or join in the fun with some live tunes, Barefoot Beach Club is the perfect place to enjoy the beach vibe.

Grab a refreshing drink at Barefoot Beach Club and enjoy the stunning sunset views while relaxing by the ocean.

8. Take a Day Trip to My Son Sanctuary

A visit to My Son Sanctuary is an unforgettable experience and a must-do when you’re in Hoi An. Located about an hour’s drive from the town, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to a complex of ancient Hindu temples built by the Champa Kingdom between the 4th and 13th centuries. The temples are nestled in a lush valley, surrounded by dense jungle and mountains, creating a mystical atmosphere.

As you explore the sanctuary, you’ll be amazed by the intricate carvings and stonework that tell the story of the Champa people. Despite some damage from time and war, My Son remains one of Vietnam’s most important archaeological sites. The mix of natural beauty and historical significance makes it a fascinating place to visit.

Getting Around Town

Biking and Motorbiking

Biking is the way to go here, you can rent one for about $1-2 a day. You’ll love riding through the rice paddies, feeling the breeze and seeing Hoi An as if you’re a local. If you’re up for something faster, rent a motorbike for around $6-8 a day (24 hours)! For a fun and scenic ride through Hoi An, don’t miss the chance to join the FUSE Hoi An Bicycle Tour and explore the beautiful rice paddies like a local!

On Foot or By Bus

Hoi An is small enough to walk around, which we highly recommend especially early in the morning before the crowds hit and the temperature rises in the warmer months.

Tips From the FUSE Team

  • Bargaining is Key: Hoi An’s markets are great for souvenirs, but don’t forget to bargain. Start low (maybe half of what they ask), and go up a bit if you need to. They expect it!
  • Stay Hydrated: The tropical weather can be intense, especially if you walk around a lot. Bring a reusable water bottle, most places offer free refills.
  • Respect Temple Rules: Some temples have dress codes, so pack a scarf or something to cover your shoulders and knees. Also, remember to take off your shoes.
  • Watch for “Lantern Sellers”: Along the river, vendors might ask you to buy lanterns to float on the water. They can be pretty persistent, but a friendly “Không, cảm ơn” means “No, thank you!” usually does the trick.
